DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY:
The classes in Chemistry, as a part of different science programmes, started in this college in the academic year 1976-77. From the session 1989-90, the under-graduation programme with Chemistry as an honours subject runs in full fledge. In the academic year 2023-24, the PG programme in Chemistry also started to provide further higher education to the students. From an early time, the department has made a full effort in its curricular and co-curricular activities for the betterment of the students and, hence, for the betterment of human society.
Vision
The Chemistry Department aims to achieve excellence in providing higher education and training the young mind to do research in the different areas of Chemical Sciences.
Mission
- To create a friendly atmosphere among teachers and students for a better teaching-learning process and sharing of new knowledge in the field of chemical sciences.
- To impart rigorous training to increase confidence and expertise among students in different fields of Chemistry.
- To provide an environment in which to gain knowledge and face different competitive examinations containing chemistry as one subject.
- To provide exposure to students in the field of different areas of research in Chemistry and different laboratories conducting those researches.
- To serve as role models to students for safe and ethical professional behaviour.
- To create a chemically literate society to reduce environmental pollution.
Activities
To fulfil the vision and mission of the department, in addition to the regular teaching-learning process, several co-curricular activities are carried out every year to encourage the students. At the beginning of the session, the senior students welcome the newly joined students. The teachers and the senior students speak about the advantages of choosing chemistry as the study subject in this orientation programme. They also narrate the advantages of choosing the Chemistry Department of Govt. Science College, Chatrapur, for their study. In this programme, the department also felicitates the rank holder and topper students of the department to encourage everyone to perform better. To increase student activity, the department conducts student seminars every week. In every seminar, two to three students give a talk on different topics of Chemistry. For this, students prepare the presentations in the form of ppt., make these corrected by their mentor and present that in front of the other students and staff of the department. After the presentation, all students and staff participate in useful discussions. The department also invites professors, researchers, and industrialists to give extramural lectures at different seminars and to motivate the students to learn about the different areas of chemical sciences. In the year 2023-24, the department organized a national seminar in which three professors from different national-level institutes were invited to give talks in their field of research and interact with students. To gain exposure to different areas of research and industries, the department conducts study tours and outreach programmes for students to different educational institutions, research centres and industries. In the year 2023-24, in an outreach programme, the PG students attended the “3rd OCS one-day extended lecture series 2023” conducted on 4th December 2023 at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar. At the end of the session, the department organizes a function planned by the junior students to give farewell to the outgoing students. In this programme, the student representative briefly explains the different activities performed in the department in that academic year.
